Energy poverty has been cited as the most significant challenge facing the developing world; in the case of Africa, over 600 million people lack access to electricity. Africa’s population growth is expected to double by 2050, and the continent needs to create an estimated 11 million jobs per year to accommodate new entrants into the job market; this requires energy production for labor intensive sectors such as agriculture and manufacturing. Africa’s yearly energy consumption is expected to increase by more than 300% from 450 terawatt-hours to 1500 terawatt-hours by 2040.

Increased deployment of nuclear power from 400GW to 1000GW by 2050, was identified as a strategy to mitigate climate change by the UN during COP21, with the bulk of this increase in developing countries. This session will describe how advanced nuclear power plant technological solutions can address the issues that have limited deployment of nuclear power in developing countries.
