Director for Multilateral Climate and Clean Energy Engagement
Michael Apicelli is the Director for Multilateral Climate and Clean Energy Engagement at the U.S. Department of Energy. Prior to this appointment, he was the DOE Office Director and Counselor at the U.S. Mission to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). His responsibilities included coordinating U.S. engagement with the International Energy Agency (IEA) and Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA), both Part II OECD organizations. In addition, Mr. Apicelli produced research products and reporting on energy issues, and maintained effective communications with U.S. and internationally recognized energy experts in the areas of climate and energy security, energy efficiency, and clean energy sources. Mr. Apicelli served as Energy Attaché at DOE’s Moscow Office from 2012-2015, implementing bilateral clean energy cooperation in the public and private sectors and authoring energy reporting. Mr. Apicelli joined the Department of Energy in 2007 as the Desk Officer for Russia, taking the lead on Eurasian regional energy policy and related programmatic development issues.

Mr. Apicelli received his BA in Russian Studies from Middlebury College, and his Juris Doctor and Masters in International Relations from Syracuse University’s College of Law and Maxwell School of International Relations. He is licensed to practice law in Maryland and New Jersey, his home state. Mr. Apicelli is married and has two daughters.
